Yo u’ll likely drive by Pontarlier, make a quick stop at the Sbarro museum near the airport. (Franco Sbarro the weird car builder, not the airports crappy pizza joints).

Thats good to know for next time. Little late for flights lol. My girlfriend might be moving to Amsterdam though so I might have more of an excuse to come in the future too!

Well, you did reply to a post from February ;)

Is your girlfriend moving to the Netherlands for a semester or two, or is she emigrating? As a Dutchman (living in Germany) I support moving here.

Her job is emigrating there so if she wants to keep it, going there is required. She is pretty deadset on the idea and while its not in the cards for me to do the same for at least a couple of years, I’ll definitely be visiting often. Then if she likes it enough, id consider moving or alternatively if the cold is not for her, she will find another job and come home. So it’ll be at least for 2-3 years if not longer. I’d rather go someplace warm like Spain or Italy. My main concern is the lack of mountains to drive around and driving culture in general in the Netherlands. Certainly would love some insight about living there and doing all things cars and outdoors stuff!

Driving culture... Well, it’s flat, very crowded and non-tiny cars are overtaxed. Doesn’t mean there is no driving culture though.

If it’s cold depends on your perspective. Winters are very mild, but so are the summers. In winter it will hardly freeze during day time and there are maybe 2 days of snow per year. In summer there are only a few days a year when the temperature exceeds 30°C.

The Netherlands is much more lax with car modifications than many other Western European countries though. It will have to pass inspection, which makes sense to me, but those are rather common sense inspections. I did an engine swap, transmission swap, brake swap and suspension swap in my car. All of the donors were from the same brand but the parts were never available on my model (1987 Peugeot 205). Other than the engine swap all of the modifications were simply deemed acceptable during the regular yearly safety inspection. The engine swap increased displacement, doubled torque and added a turbo. I did need a special inspection for that, but it was only about €130 or so and now my modifications are registered in the cars paperwork. So insurance will not be any kind of problem either.

It will be a culture shock though, from my Dutch perspective the US is (hyperbolically) a police state-anarchy, and a very rich third world country . If that makes any sense at all.

That sounds like a “good” culture shock then haha. My concern was moreso having a place to go drive somewhere. Idk what casual “HPDE style” racing is like over there or just places to take a casual “Sunday drive” to wherever. I would hope to be able to commute with public transit or biycle if I ever moved over there. And be able to focus on automotive stuff as more of a hobby and road trips rather than day to day survival.

I am not overly concerned about restrictions getting in the way or the costs associated. I’m not one to go crazy with mods and I love older small cars that are underpowered lol. I am more concerned about being far away from ski mountains or just any mountains in general as well as having space to store/work on a car.

The general culture difference would certainly be a welcome change to me as well. I am quite fond of actual “first world countries” and everything that comes along with that. It will mean changing job industries but its why I chose Engineering to begin with, having the flexibility to do different stuff.
